WARDEN MESSAGE - Meningitis
March 4, 2005

The press has been reporting that Chefchaouen and Al Hoceima have 12 confirmed cases of meningitis, resulting in 5 deaths over the past 2 weeks. According to the Ministry of Health, this particular outbreak is bacterial. The U.S. Embassy in Rabat has advised its American personnel that anyone planning to travel to Chefchaouen or Al Hoceima should be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis. If you are planning to visit these areas, please consult with your physician prior to travel.

Casual visitors to an area with a few cases of meningitis are not considered at very high risk of contracting the disease. Nonetheless, since the government is recommending vaccination of the residents of these areas, we recommend that visitors consult their physicians regarding vaccination as well.
